Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Women's participation in politics has long been recognized as a key factor in promoting gender equality and fostering inclusive development. In Jama’are Local Government Area (LGA) of Bauchi State, women have traditionally been underrepresented in political leadership roles. However, in recent years, there has been an increasing push for greater female involvement in local governance, both as candidates and voters. This shift is driven by the belief that women bring unique perspectives to policymaking and can play a crucial role in addressing local development challenges (Adamu & Idris, 2024).
The participation of women in politics has been linked to a range of positive outcomes, including improvements in healthcare, education, and social welfare. In Jama’are, women's involvement in political decision-making has the potential to address pressing issues such as poverty, child welfare, and gender-based violence, all of which significantly affect local development (Sule & Rukayya, 2023). This study seeks to examine the impact of women's political participation on local development in Jama’are, exploring how their engagement in politics influences policy decisions and community outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of the importance of women's political participation, women in Jama'are LGA still face significant barriers to active involvement in politics. These barriers include cultural norms, lack of political education, and limited access to political networks. As a result, the potential benefits of women's leadership and contributions to local development are not fully realized. This study aims to evaluate the impact of women's participation in politics on local development in Jama'are and to identify strategies for increasing women's political engagement in the region.
